AMD is the eternal rival of the giant Nvidia in the segment of graphics cards. How is the manufacturer’s range organized and which GPU models could pay off?

AMD is known for its processors, but also graphics cards for gaming PCs. AMD’s GPU line is called Radeon. If they take on Intel on CPUs, it’s Nvidia, which the American brand deals with on graphics cards. It’s clear that Nvidia has been at the top of sales (and in the hearts of gamers) for many years. AMD thus occupies the place of eternal number two with only a 12% market share. The brand also recently announced that it is pulling out of the high-end sector to favor the entry-level and mid-range segment. The brand can be interesting in this segment as well.

The new generation of AMD graphics cards
During CES 2025, AMD lifted the veil on its new generation of graphics cards. Here are Radeon RX 9070 XT and 9070 with the ambition to compete with Nvidia, the undisputed and undisputed leader. We know very little about this range at the moment, but Frandroid editors will undoubtedly be testing them out.
What is the best AMD graphics card?
Generation 7000
The 7000 generation was released from 2022 and is based on RDNA 3. At the top we find the RX 7900, followed by the 7800, 7700 and 7600.

The 7900 XTX is currently the most powerful graphics card in the AMD lineup on the RDNA 3 architecture, and is therefore also the most expensive. This is a slightly more powerful version than the XT.

It integrates 96 CUs with an in-game frequency of 2.3 GHz and a video memory of 24 GB in GDDR6 on a 384-bit bus.
The most powerful card in the catalog is less massive than its Nvidia equivalents, namely the 4080. Still, it remains a beautiful beast. The connectors remain classic: two eight-pin PCI-E. A good note for AMD: DisplayPort is a 2.1 standard, so it can handle 8K screens at 165Hz or 4K at 480Hz.
So what does this mean in terms of strength? In raw 3D on our 3DMark benchmark, the card does slightly better than the 4080. On the other hand, once you add ray tracing… it’s second to none.
This is also true in games. On this page, given the placement of the card, 4K performance is expected. Overall it will do great in all recent games if you stick to classic rasterization.
When it comes to power consumption, the card is not a good performer compared to Nvidia’s 40th generation, as it can reach up to 350W peak in game.

A notch down we find the RX 7800 XT, which is priced much lower and thus represents a great opportunity. It’s roughly on par with Nvidia’s RTX 4070. With 16 GB of VRAM in GDDR6, it also performs better than its competitor, which only has 12. Again, we note a high consumption with an average of 270 W and peaks of up to 400 W.

Radeon RX 7800
The advantage of this card lies in its price: today we can find it around 500 euros, while the RTX 4070 will be around 650 euros. If you want to run recent demanding games without having to make graphical concessions or leave your wallet, this is a good choice.

With the RX 7600 XT, which is AMD’s equivalent of Nvidia’s RTX 4060, we go down another notch.

Here, expect to play in Ultra in Full HD or 1440p for some titles. VRAM is still high with 16 GB We find Display Port in version 2.1 which is expensive for AMD: it is a good point on a card at this price. In reality, it is around 350 euros.
However, its RTX 4060 competitor is selling… for the same price. And while the 8GB of VRAM is less than the AMD model’s 16GB, it offers similar performance and supports DLSS and handles ray tracing much better. It is therefore difficult to fully recommend the RX 7600 XT…
RX 6000 generation
We recommend the 6000 generation for small budgets, for the basic and middle class. It is possible to find interesting offers for those who do not want to invest too much.

At less than €300 – generally even €230 – the RX 6600 is an interesting choice for 1080p gaming and if you don’t plan to use ray tracing.

It might be worth playing slightly older games like Far Cry that do not integrate ray tracing, or for current games that would benefit little from it (e.g Diablo IV or Call of Duty). However, this is not a purchase for the future…

The RX 6400 is one of the cheapest graphics cards in the AMD catalog. For just 150 euros, you won’t get better. Do you have a mini budget? This little card represents an interesting quality/price ratio.

For those who don’t want to spend more than 200 euros on a GPU, we usually recommend the Nvidia GTX 1650: the Radeon RX 6400 is the equivalent from AMD. Note that the RX 6400 supports ray tracing, unlike the GTX 1650.
Overall, expect to run your games in Full HD with medium settings. This will come in handy for titles that aren’t too challenging or a bit old, such as oldies Assassin’s Creed, Overwatch 2, Fortnite, Battlefield 2042…and more.
AMD technology
More than in raw performance, it’s in technology that AMD is far behind Nvidia. This is especially visible on ray tracing and also on DLSS.
AMD groups its various technologies under this term HYPR-RX. By activating this profile, you will get the benefits of the mentioned technologies:
- FSR : this is AMD’s equivalent to Nvidia’s DLSS. FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) is a techniqueupscaling (scaled). FSR also increases speed frames per second (FPS) and improves the smoothness of compatible games. Unlike DLSS, FSR is compatible with all GPUs.
- RSR (Radeon Super Resolution): a scaling function close to FSR. RSR is built into the controller and can be used in all games, especially if the game does not support FSR.
- AFMF (AMD Fluid Motion Frames): image generation technology. This allows you to add images (frame) for greater fluency. Unlike FSR, all DX11 and DX12 games are compatible.
- Anti-lag : reduces in-game latency, designed for competitive gaming and reduced click response.

Why Choose an AMD Graphics Card?
